I know that time works differently on the barge, but it's hard to get comfortable knowing that trouble's waiting back home. I never really appreciated before how hard some of the wardens here work, knowing that lives are at stake. It's so weird not being able to call Linda and ask how the kids are doing. I know how they're doing, but it's not the same.

How do you guys do it? Sit around all day, reading or going about your business, knowing that while you're stuck here trying to do a long job, the people you care about are dead or dying all the time?

Your preaching to the choir there, Buddy. [Argh, he can't say "Slick" anymore. His language is crippled.] And somehow sitting feels pretty damn exhausting.

Strange how that works, isn't it? I guess when you've been running most of your life, sitting still is the biggest challenge you face.

It really is. And getting older I don't think makes it go away. It just puts you in this spot where you want to do as much as you can to keep up.

It's not all that comfortable, but I had no intention of staying here permanently. And I guess the uncomfortable gives me some motivation to try harder.

It's true, there's that. Not that I needed any more motivation to keep me going. I guess there just isn't a lot of advice to give, huh?

Not really, but sometimes it helps to know you're not the only one with that sort of thing on your mind.
